Rainy Day, Time to Post
A long time between posts again, but I've been busy - I promise!!

Since my last post:
  • More riding lessons
  • Pilates and Rider Wellbeing
  • Got my Own Horse!
  • Teaching my Beginners Group
  • BIG Trail Ride!
  • Trip to Hobart
  • Work, Work, Work...
Horse Stuff

The lovely Andrea from Southern Tas Pilates made a trip to the North of the state in July, and I was lucky enough to get a spot in both the Pilates Mat Class and the Rider Wellbeing Class.  I learned a few things I didn't know about my body, and some techniques to deal with everyday 'problems'.  I also learned a lot about my posture and riding position, and the change in the ease of riding was almost instant!!

Later that weekend, I took a trip with Merry to visit a lovely old Thoroughbred named Gypsy.  Despite the freezing, howling wind, my tired, nervous body, and the slippery ground, she walked slowly around the roundyard with me on her bare back, in nothing but a rope halter.  From those first few moments, I know she and I would become friends.  So, the next day, Merry and I drove out with the float to pick Gypsy up, who called to me as I walked to her paddock to take her away from her friends and her son.

And so begins the story of Gypsy and I!  It's been almost a month now, and we have had a couple of short rides together, and are developing a great understanding.  She is kind, gentle and willing, and I know we will have a lot of fun together.

One of my new workmates - Amelia - is also a Horsey person, and was kind enough to invite me to the Tasmanian High Country Rider's Assoc. ride at Kimberley last month.  I rode her lovely 23-year-old boy Bundy and had a hell of a lot of fun!  Some of the downhill sections scared the pants off me, and I was sure I was coming off more than once.  But I didn't!!  Can't wait to do it again sometime.
Work

Well, I'm still there!!  Not much more to say aside from I am lucky to be working with a great group of thoughtful and supportive staff.  I'm still enjoying it, and leave every work-day with a smile.  It makes me laugh, makes me cry, but most of all it makes me feel whole.

Road Trip!

Had a bit of a trip to Hobart last weekend to catch up with friends and family, especially Emma & Charles Gregory and their spawn(!) to celebrate the impending birth of their third child!

One of the things attendees to the 'Blessingway' were asked to do was to knit or crochet a square to be added into a blanket for the baby.  I haven't knitted in years as it hurts my wrists, and have never learned to crochet, so that's what I did this week!  After only a few attempts, I managed to create a pretty square-ish looking patch to become part of the babys blanket.  Proud of myself!

I also managed to do a bit of shopping while down there.  But only a tiny bit, I promise!

Dogs

I'm still teaching my beginners group at training - only one more lesson next weekend, then the following week is their assesment!!  I'm really proud of the progress they have all made, and while I would like to think that it is due to my guidance, I would be more realistic to attribute it to each person and family's dedication to their dog.

Well, enough rambling for now... I'll try and write again soon!!
Horses and Studies and Work, Oh My!
It's been so long since my last post, but as usual, I have a great excuse.

Since I last posted:
  • School holidays
  • Several riding lessons
  • Lovely trail ride
  • Back to school
  • Started instructing at TDTC
  • Two snow trips
  • Three days of work experience at Mowbray Veterinary Clinic
  • Started my new job at Mowbray Veterinary Clinic!
  • Made plans for next years studies
Exciting huh?!

Horses

I've had some lovely lessons with Nan Catmur out at Longford, although this has been difficult due to the amount of rainfall lately.  I had been waiting to post about my riding experiences until I had a decent photo of me riding, but it seems that every photo of me atop a horse is accompanied by an idiotic grin because I'm having so much fun!  So here it is anyway.

I've also been lucky enough to do some work with with Merry and her lovely herd, including going on a breathtaking trail ride with her mares Eclipse and Kissaya.

Also been looking after my friend Lara's lovely horse Onyx when they have been away, and exercising him as often as I can get out there to help build his muscle tone back up.  He is a handsome and patient boy, but very cheeky!

Work & School

started out doing just one day a week work experience for my Animal Studies Certificate II course at Mowbray Veterinary Clinic, where my family's animals have been patients for the last twenty-odd years.  Luckily for me, they were hoping to put on a new staff member, and I was asked to start!  My first day of paid work as a Vet Nurse was on the 10th of June, and I have enjoyed (almost) every moment of it.  When working with animals and people, you have to deal with some hard times, and support clients as best you can with some pretty difficult decisions.  The work is exciting, sad, happy, eye-opening and fulfilling all at once, and I finally feel like I have come home - this is what I am meant to do.

So much so that next year I plan on beginning Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, with the view to going on to a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing once the Cert IV is completed.  Several of the units in my course this year will count towards my Level 4 Certification, as will many of the units I plan on taking at Polytechnic next year in either Animal Studies or Animal Management (once they decide which they are running!!).  I am ridiculously excited, and finally truly optimistic about the future.

I also have another job prospect, as a Demonstrator for a national pet food company, but more on that at a later date!

Gone to the dogs...

I have also recently started instructing with my Dog Obedience club, and am looking forward to taking my own obedience class next weekend!  As you all know, I am quite passionate about animals, behaviour and training are two of my favourite areas.

Snow Everywhere!

We've had some big, early dumps of snow in Tasmania this year, and we wasted no time in getting out amongst it!  On the 9th of June, we bundled the dogs into the car, and took to the roads in search of snow.  We didn't have to go far, and couldn't have gone further if we had tried, but managed to get to the picnic area on Mount Barrow and play in about a foot of snow and slush!  Also took a drive along the Sideling to see the snow there - absolutely mind blowing!!  We followed that up with another snow trip - to the Central Highlands this time, on Sunday the 12th June.  We took along extra's - Buffy and Naomi - for Buff's first snow trip!

Unfortunately, I forgot to take any photos the first trip, and the video camera was flat for the second one!  Although with that promising start, I'm sure there will be plenty more snow trips this year!

All the best for now, and thanks for reading!
Busy and Quiet
As the title suggests, we've had a busy couple of weeks, and I've been a little quiet on the posting front!

We've had our lovely Niece Brittany and our cheeky Nephew Braedyn staying here a couple of days a week, and between having fun with them, housework, baking and catching up on other stuff, I've had very little time to sit at the PC let alone post!

But I have been up to a few interesting things that I will share with you...

First of all, Broc, Brittany and I took a trip out to the lovely Liffey Falls Reserve, staring in awe along the way at all the destruction and mayhem the recent flash flooding had caused, especially to the road surfaces and bridges...

We did the return walk from the main carpark to the bottom of the falls.  Always stunning!

On the return drive via. Deloraine, we were lucky enough to spot a little Echidna foraging around on the roadside, so we stopped to introduce ourselves.

We've spent more time swimming too!!  At the Aquatic Centre, and also at St Leonards Picnic Ground.

A couple of photos of our Nephew, Braedyn to round ou the post!  On the Left, he's shooting a bow and arrow for the first time at yesterdays Henley on Mersey.  On the Right, he's some kind of crazy bubble monster, enjoying himself in our enormous spa!

Scamander Trip: Day 4, Heading Home!
Updated: Added Pictures

We awoke to a gloriously sunny, calm morning - what a horrible day to leave!

A drive down to Bicheno, with a beach stop along the way to feel my toes squidge through the sand.  We made our way to the Sealife Centre, which no longer has an aquarium, but does have a lovely gift store and restaurant.  We continued on to the Blowhole.  Even on a calm day, it didn't dissapoint!

The abundance and variety of sealife inhabiting the rocks around the Blowhole area was just fascinating!  Seaweeds, starfish, molluscs, crabs - even a freshwater pool in the rocks near the car park with resident frogs!!

We managed to spend quite some time wandering around on the rocks down there, then headed back to the Sealife Centre for some lunch.  I was gobsmacked by the view as I pulled up again in the carpark:

We chose the Sea Life Special to share for lunch - and wow!  What a feast.

I decided I just had to brave the water before leaving the coast behind, and was rewarded with watching a large school of fish feed just in front of me.

All in all, I had a lovely trip away with my Mum.  All the places we visited were absolutely fantastic, but the highlight was definitely our trip to East Coast Natureworld!  If you're passing through or near Bicheno, do yourself a favor and go visit!
Scamander Trip: Day 3
Woke up this morning to the sound of rain, and the waves crashing in the distance.  Ahh...

First up, we drove out to St Helens Point, and walked along Beer Barrel Beach, and took in the scenery, plants and wildlife...

Pretty sure these guys thought I was there to eat them!

This little guy had attitude.
We stopped off in St Helens for some lovely lunch at the Village Store and More cafe - Mum describes the soup with accompanying sourdough bread as 'just sensational', and my over-sized sausage roll was pretty damn good too!  We checked in at the Tourist Information Centre to see exactly how far away our next destination was, and happened upon the St Helens History room.  If you're in St Helens, it's certainly worth a look - even if you're not really into history, there's bound to be something in there to interest you!

Then a drive out to the Pyengana Dairy Company to sample some yummies from their cafe, and their cheese of course!

On the return drive, we couldn't resist doing the Halls Falls walk (11km short of The Blue Tier when heading out of Pyengana), and boy am I glad we made the slight detour...

Back at the hotel after a long day of trekking and sightseeing, we had a 'leftover buffet' of Leavenbank Potato Sourdough, fetta-stuffed peppers and chilli mussels from Pasini's, fresh tomatoes, parsley, Smoked Salmon, Pyengana 'Devilish cheese and Eureka Farm Tomato Chutney.  Mmmm.....

Homeward bound tomorrow, with a stop in Bicheno to check out the Sealife Centre and have some lunch.  See you tomorrow!
Scamander Trip: Day 2
Awoke this morning to a perfect, calm sunny day - Wow!!

So today, we took a trip down to Bicheno to visit the Natureworld Wildlife Park.  I took LOTS of photos, but have only selected a few to put up here.

Not a lot of blogging from me again - I'm still pretty sick, typical for a holiday right?! - but again, the pictures tell their own story.

I so cute!

Duuude...

Beautiful Fallow Deer

I pissed off the Emu, making funny noises at him - this is him all puffed up!
Might make a trip to the Bicheno Sealife Centre tomorrow, or maybe a drive up to St Helens and Binalong Bay - who knows!
Scamander Trip: Day 1
Well, here I am, safe and sound in Scamander!
I'm here for 3 nights, having a well-deserved break with my dear Mummy. After arriving late yesterday afternoon, we took a long stroll to check out our immediate area around the Scamander Beach Resort Hotel, and take some photos of course!

Enough from me, I think the photos themselves speak volumes about how gorgeous this place is.

Part of the view from our room on the Second Floor

Random driftwood structures on the beach - they looked amazing

Breakwater at the river inlet

Managed a snap of Mum - Shhh, don't tell her!  Looking South along the beach

Seaweed - Close up!

Little tiny sand goby

Little bitty Invertebrate of some description

Looking back to the bridge, out hotel on the left

Today we're off to the wildlife park in Bicheno, and for a bit of a look around. Yep, more pictures there!!
I had the most wonderful day at dog training with Abby on Sunday!! She has improved so much, I'm very proud of her. Feeling a lot better about myself too after a pretty difficult training session the week before. On Tuesday I took Miss Abby to the vet for her annual check-up and vaccinations, and she sat in the waiting room with other dogs! I was so proud!

I have decided that after one more dedicated training weekend with Abby, I'm going to start taking Harry as well, and start him in Grade 1 (after Abby's session is over). This will give him some more interaction with other people and dogs, an outlet for his doggy intelligence, and give me something much more relaxing to do while Abby is chilling out in the car after her session.

Sunday afternoon Broc and I, along with Dan and Anita went on a little road trip up to Greens Beach, then through into West Head and the headland area of Narawntapu National Park. We spent a couple hours trekking around on the cliffs, in the bush and on the beach and let me say, what a stunning area it is!! I'd love to go back again when there's a couple more hours of sunlight and do the whole walk. The amount of critters on the rocky section of the beach was just amazing. Hundreds and hundreds of snails!! Broc and Dan found a dead shark, very smelly but pretty cool looking. I took some pictures, which I'll put up on facebook sometime over the weekend.

I've been getting out walking with my big boy a lot more, and I feel much better for it. I've been aiming to get out for a fairly decent walk every second day, but I try to do something reasonably physical on the days I'm not walking. For example, yesterday afternoon I spent two hours trimming trees and shovelling dirt at a friends house while Broc cleaned out their guttering. I managed to make a large section of their driveway a foot wider on either side by clearing off the dirt, tree bits, grass and mulch that had accumulated there in the last seven years thanks to some sub-standard maintenance by their tenants.

I actually a Saturday off! This weekend, it has been 10 years that Broc and I have been together. We plan on going out for a movie tonight, and just generally spending some time together doing stuff, as we so seldom get to do. It's lovely to think that we've spent so much time together and can still appreciate each others company. We've grown a lot together over these years and shared so much. I can't imagine my life without him, and look forward to spending many more years together.

I Love you Broc!

Honeymoon: Day 1
The drive up to Stanley was surreal - once we passed Burnie, this heavy rainy mist set in and made the landscape look like a scene out of some medieval movie.

Once we arrived at our hotel, we were greeted with a surprise - we had been upgraded to the Seaview Spa Suite! Score :D

After such a busy few weeks leading up to the wedding, and a very tiring day before, we were just glad to have a nice King size bed to veg out on for a couple hours, so we ordered room service for dinner, and napped until 7PM. Ahh bliss...

Here's the view from the hotel room:
Finally, some action!
Okay, so I've been really, really slack with the blog lately. But I've been so busy!!

There's been Easter, a trip to Melbourne, we sold two cars and bought a new one. Plus there's been work, work, work and all the usual stuff aswell!

Anyway, I'm finally here again.

We sold our beloved Blue XD, and my trusty old Pulsar, to help pay for our newest purchase - a 1994 Ford Falcon XR6!!

Isn't it just gorgeous?! Of course, Tasmanian car prices being what they are, this necessitated an overnight trip to Melbourne for the two of us (can't let Broc have all the fun!). We managed to get in a little bit of touristy stuff between our extended stay at Vic Roads and boarding the Spirit II to sail back home.

We visited the Melbourne Aquarium to see the Penguin Exhibit (and all the others of course!), then went for a look around the Crown Casino where we wasted some of our hard-earned simoleons, and sampled some yummyness from their food court. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures inside the Crown, but I must say, their main foyer is just amazing. Giant marble fountains spanning 3 floors, and an amazing ceiling light display - if you ever get the chance, make sure you go and have a look.

I've posted some of the better pics from the aquarium up on FB - look here.

Fun, Food & Ferrets!
What could be more fun on Australia Day than jumping in the car and going on a short road trip to Latrobe to participate in Henley on Mersey?!

They've got everything, from regatta events, fun activities for the kids, helicopter rides, RC car stunts and market stalls to wood-chopping events, the Betta Milk boat race and the famous Ferret Frolic and Ferret Racing!

This year was possibly the biggest turnout I've ever seen there - cars and people galore! The parl at Bell's Parade was packed - on both sides of the river. It's just a perfect spot for this sort of event - nice cool flowing water and loads and loads of big shady trees.

We were there for the ferret racing of course, sadly we arrived early in the afternoon so missed the boat racing. :(

The Ferret Chocolate wheel is always a big favorite - in place of the traditional wheel, a plastic half-drum with ferret sized holes cut in it is used. The ferret is places inside and the barrel spun - If you are holding the ticket corresponding to the numbered hole the ferret comes out of you win!

But! I did get some awesome ferret pictures, as well as a bit of a shock! Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett was officiating at the event, which included awarding prizes & certificates, and overseeing some of the ferret racng too. I guess he was up for a change from dealing with weasles for something a little cuter ;)

On the way home, we stopped at Ashgrove Cheese to sample their latest creations, and bring some home of course! Broc stuck to the usual suspects - Lancashire and some goold old Farmhouse, but I went a little further afield (as per usual!).

I picked out a block of their new Cumin Seed cheese - a rich creamy club cheese mixed with cumin seeds. Tastes awesome on its' own, and I'm looking forward to having it melted over some tasty curries and other delights - mmm.

I found the most awesome gift - and nibbly snack for myself - taster sticks! At $1.60 each they are great for trying new cheeses that you're still not quite sure of . I bought a stick of Double Gloucester and Bush Pepper. I was tempted to get a stick of Wild Wasabi too but luckily my local Fruit & Veggie place stocks it ;)

I also bought a stick of Lavender cheese for my Nan. It sounds unusual, and the taste is unusual too, but not at all unpleasant. A nice snacky cheese.

I also picked out a nice wedge of Heidi Farm Gruyere - very ouchy on the wallet, but sooo worth it!

We also saw some of the Cow Art on show at Ashgrove - this was my favorite. The program was developed to help schoolchildren gain a greater understanding of the dairy industry. Pretty cool eh?
